The Olympic torch will travel through Jeju City this weekend to celebrate the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games to be held in Pyeongchang from Jan. 29 to Feb. 5. The Jeju welcoming ceremony, including a number of musical performances, will be held in front of the Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Office.
The torch will be carried from the former location of Jeju Ilbo, through Sammu Park, Shin Jeju Rotary and Jeju Provincial Office, to Samsung Saengmyeong building on Jan. 26. The event will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 10:10 a.m.
The 133 torch bearers of the Games are divided into two roughly equal groups. Composed of police and athletes, the runners started from the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on Jan. 23 with the aim of each team traveling through different parts of the nation before gathering in Pyeongchang on Jan. 28. The group who will arrive in Jeju includes Ahn Jin Yong, a swimmer from Daegu with an intellectual disability.
