The following is a translated summary of a report from the local press. It has been edited for clarity, including the addition of links and information needed for readers unfamiliar with Jeju. — Ed.

The opening ceremony for the new S-Joongang Hospital was held on March 12 and the new hospital has begun treating patients. The seven-story hospital, which is located to the west of the Jeju traditional markets, was built in a modern style and will operate 28 departments, according to hospital director Ha Young-il.

Ha added that the hospital has “… high-tech equipment…which leads [to] accurate diagnosis and [will] minimize waiting times,” and, “…emergency treatments are available for 24 hours a day, for 365 days a year.”

The Joongang Medical Foundation expects the hospital will provide high quality medical treatment to patients. By 2015, they are looking to extend the total number of beds at Joongang hospitals to 1,000. The “S” in S-Joongang Hospital refers to the new hospital’s location in Shin (New) Jeju, which is the western part of the city. The original Joongang Hospital is located in Gu (Old) Jeju. — Halla Ilbo
