Gapado, an islet off the south coast of Jeju, is famous for its green barley. The island has held a festival since 2009 to showcase the changing colors of the crop in spring. Starting from April 13 the festival continues for 23 days until early May giving visitors the benefit of the changing colors of the barley fields from green at the beginning, to gold towards the end of the festival.

The festival’s event programs include:

  • Guided tours through the barley fields.
  • Making a barley leaf pipe musical instrument.
  • Kite-flying over barley fields.
  • Fishing on the traditional boat the Tewoo.
  • Song contests.

Other events include a marathon through the green barley fields; making barley bibimbap with seaweed as well as the chance to catch octopus on weekends.
