Social welfare organization Peace Village is a meat processing enterprise, certified as one of the first social enterprises on Jeju Island. Peace Village submitted eight products at IFFA 2013 — the leading international trade fair for processing, packing and sales in the meat industry — and was rewarded with an impressive six gold medals.
The 2013 exhibition, which ran from May 4 to May 9, saw 60,000 trade visitors from around 142 countries arrive in Frankfurt to view the range of products and services offered by 960 exhibitors. At 61 percent the proportion of trade visitors from outside Germany rose significantly compared to the last event three years and was the highest ever.
Peace Village was awarded gold medals for its:
Fleischkaese — made with shrimps and black rice;
Vegetable sausage using Jeju turmeric;
Mushroom bulgogi sausage;
Green tea sausage using Jeju green tea;
Sausage using Jeju Sasa palmata [bean] Nakai and
Director of Peace Village, Lee Kui Kyung, told Jeju World Wide that during the competition she and a manager of the factory had to make the organization’s sausages at an unfamiliar kitchen at a fairground. She described it as arduous.
“That process was sheer torture from start to finish, but we did our best!” said Lee.
Director Lee said she was very proud of this result. Not only is it the first time Korea has been represented at such a prestigious competition in the meat industry field, she said, but as newcomers they still came home with top prizes.
